This chasm is located in Dordogne, between Rocamadour and Sarlat, it offers an unusual visit in the bowels of the earth. To enter, rush into an open-air shaft 75 meters deep. Once you have descended 103 meters underground, take a seat on a boat and then walk along the galleries, along the water. There, the sky has given way to a succession of vaulted rooms where the light diminishes as you progress… But keep your eyes open so as not to miss the Great Pendeloque, a stalactite 60 meters long. It was a magical moment that I was able to experience, and I can’t wait to go back!
In the Haute Vallée de l’Hérault, between the Cevennes and the Mediterranean, the Cave of Demoiselles is at the heart of many legends… One of them tells that while looking for his sheep, a shepherd fell into the cave. He managed to return to the village and told that he saw thousands of fairies dancing around him when he landed in the cave. With its cathedral-like main room 52 meters high and 120 meters long, its giant stalagmites and stalactites and its translucent draperies, the Cave of Demoiselles is a real time machine.
If the real galleries of the Lascaux cave are not open to the public since 1963 after the discovery of a corrosive fungus, the facsimile of the original cave, called Lascaux IV, does not take anything away from the magic of the place, quite the contrary! Embark on a journey through time of about 1h30, retrace the history of the discovery of the place and discover the impressive cave paintings dated tens of thousands of years.
In the heart of the Cevennes, the Cocalière cave offers an incredible journey to the center of the earth. Carved out of the limestone of the Jurassic summit 35 million years ago, this cave is still in formation today. During 1 hour, the guided tour unveils the treasures of these rock formations such as stalagmites, stalactites, columns and even a disc path, cleverly staged by spectacular light effects. With a constant temperature of 14°, it is an ideal visit during the hot summer months.
Between 90,000 and 1,000 years ago, the Saint-Marcel cave was occupied by prehistoric man. Closed to the public for preservation purposes, the Tête du Lion cave contains a rock painting dating back nearly 20,000 years. Today, more than 62 km of galleries sheltering fossils and drowned have been topographed. The lighting work on its walls and draperies highlights every detail in a wonderful play of light and shadow, which makes the visit an absolutely magical moment.
The Cave of Betharram are real underground attractions! You enter directly through a natural opening in the mountain to access the chasm that connects this floor to the river. Yes, the river! ! And this is the real attraction of this place. For more than 3.5 km, young and old alike will have the pleasure of participating in its underground activities aboard a superb dragon-headed boat… You want more? It’s a good thing, because it’s a mine train that will take you through the narrow galleries to the exit! Strong sensations guaranteed!
