30 minutes from Lausanne, lies the charming town of Montreux on the shores of Lake Leman in the canton of Vaud, Switzerland. Very often associated with the Jazz Festival which takes place every year in July, Montreux is a city not to be missed which can be discovered throughout the year. For my part, I go there once a year in June to enjoy its mild temperatures.
In this post, I will make you discover the must-sees that I could see. It’s really worth the detour!
The lakeside is where locals and tourists rush during the week and the weekend. I liked it a lot, because they are well arranged, the panorama is extraordinary, there are sculptures and there is always something going on: market, food-truck, music, etc. in summer and winter. It makes it lively.
It’s a good way to get out in the fresh air, to have a snack, and to stroll a bit by the Lake Leman. I advise you to park in the city center, so that you can enjoy a walk along the quays in the direction of Chillon Castle when you want to stretch your legs, or in the other direction to stay close to the center and the cafes, restaurants and parks.
All along this walk, I could see magnificent luxury hotels, villas and mansions of Belle Époque style, punctuated with palm trees and other exotic essences giving to the city a very exotic vacation perfume.
Clinging to the steep slopes, the Old City of Montreux seems to be lost in the heights. Yet, it takes no more than ten minutes to get from the lake to this picturesque district. And what a view!
Every year in early July, the city hosts its famous Jazz Festival. It’s very pleasant to walk along the lake where there are many food stands. The atmosphere is festive and friendly, which explains its international success.
It’s the most visited historical monument in Switzerland.
Majestic on the shores of Lake Leman, the Chillon Castle promises a journey through history and a beautiful wine tour.
Near Montreux, the Chillon Castle has been enthroned since the 12th century on a rocky islet, as if floating on Lake Leman. It’s regularly animated by exhibitions and cultural events.
I stayed in this sublime palace. It was truly magical! Its magnificent gardens impeccably maintained. Inside, the decoration of the Montreux Palace is neat and of a great elegance.
