The Camargue is a natural and wild area in the south of France, a stone’s throw from the city of Arles, bordered by the Mediterranean Sea and within the Rhone delta. Straddling two departments, the Gard and the Bouches du Rhône, the Camargue is a paradise for flora and fauna where thousands of species have set their sights on this protected area.
Wild is really the word that best characterizes the Camargue with its ponds and lagoons, its marshes as far as the eye can see or its isolated corners in the middle of nature. . What a pleasure to see pink flamingos! There are a few villages along the Camargue like Aigues Mortes.
Strolling through the villages, horseback riding, enjoying the beach, visiting the salt marshes or visiting the bird sanctuaries, so many nice activities to do in Camargue.
The Ornithological Park of Pont de Gau is a perfect nature reserve to observe the local fauna and flora. Trails will bring you closer to the captivating nature that surrounds you between ponds and lagoons. Certain species of herons, passerines, birds of prey… a large number of species can be observed all year round in the Camargue. If the pink flamingos are also observed all year round in the Park, they are not exactly considered as sedentary… but rather as wandering or nomadic birds whose population revolves around the wetlands of the Mediterranean basin.
It’s part of the landscape and history of the Camargue. The Camargue horse, with its gray coat, is resistant to the harsh conditions of the Mistral wind mixed with the humidity and cold of winter, and lives in semi-freedom. It’s the best ally of the gardians, the guardians of the herds of bulls of the Camargue that we call here the manades.
On the road going to Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer, it’s first of all the rice fields which welcome us in Camargue. Then some marshes, several herds of bulls and horses. Whether they are in semi-freedom or belonging to ranches. This is what makes the Camargue such a unique territory.
With its Basque Country feel, Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer has a multitude of restaurants and stores. The church of Notre Dame de la Mer with its crypt honored by a statue of the Virgin Sara. Climb to the roof of the church and walk the monument’s walkway to overlook the Camargue town.
I found this town to be full of charm! This medieval city of Aigues-Mortes is hidden inside its ramparts. Almost next to the big walls, the salt flats spread out as far as the eye can see.
