Lyon has a great mix of UNESCO-recognized historical sites and everything you look for in a grand city break getaway, situated in the country’s west near the Alps. Interestingly, Lyon is actually at its busiest during late spring rather than summer. I’d reconsider traveling to Lyon during the months of May, June and July since that’s when the city’s peak season is.
Lyon offers many activities for couples. It is a great destination for romantic getaway. The ancient capital of Gaul has a very long history and is extremely famous for its cuisine. The ancient setting of the old town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is ideal for gentle romantic walks. From the urban and refreshing Tête d’Or park to the Museum of Fine Arts, including an original gourmet dinner on board a bus and a visit to a small island on the Saône, Lyon is full of secret gems that will satisfy lovers.
By day, by night, by bike, by bus, on the water, by funicular or by 4 wheels, all means are good to visit this exceptional city. Read our tips for a 2-days romantic getaway in Lyon.
In order to spend a wonderful romantic week-end in Lyon, I will suggest to choose your accommodation in the “presqu’île” district as you may easily go around walking or renting bikes to discover this beautiful city! You will be in the heart of the historical Lyon between the two rivers: Rhône and Saone.
First of all, drop your bags in the majestic Continental hotel 5* in the heart of the historic building of l’Hôtel Dieu. The Hôtel-Dieu de Lyon, transformed then rebuilt, is the only Lyon establishment that has remained in operation to this day. The Hôtel-Dieu de Lyon is one of the largest buildings on the Lyon peninsula. It is built on the western edge of the Rhône, in the Bellecour district. From 2010 to 2015, the building remained unused, and major work over about three years for hotel and museum use and also to accommodate the halls of Lyon. A project that opened in June 2019!
From there you may go on a beautiful cruise on the rivers Saone and Rhône in order to discover the city and enjoy a great lunch. Climb aboard the Hermès restaurant boat to discover the city’s multiple facets and let go for a short moment as you drift along its rivers. Admire the Basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourvière, be surprised by the bold architecture of the Confluence area and escape as you behold Barbe Island, a genuine oasis of greenery at the gateway to the city. All throughout your cruise, listen to captivating commentary and let your taste-buds be stimulated by the gourmet meal cooked on-board by our chef and his staff.
Then you may get lost in the little Traboules and discover the old Lyon district. Finding them is a real treasure hunt and a pleasure with each new discovery! The Lyon traboules are passages between two streets through courtyards of buildings. They rendered great services to the population during the 2nd world war and during the revolt of the “canuts”. There are more than 300 passages throughout the city, mainly in the districts of Croix-Rousse and Vieux-Lyon. The first traboules, built in the 4th century, were used by the inhabitants to supply water, others date from the Renaissance.
These passages are considered treasures of Lyon’s heritage. Although many traboules are closed to the public, you can visit some of them while respecting the tranquility of the inhabitants. In exchange, the maintenance of these traboules is covered by the municipality. Do not hesitate to ask us to organize a visit with a great guide!
Then you can walk or take the funicular to the top of the hill to admire the sunset from the beautiful Basilica Notre Dame de Fourvière! Spectacular, the basilica dominates the city from the top of its promontory. Listed as a historical monument, it dates from the 19th century and welcomes 2 million visitors each year. The Notre-Dame de Fourvière basilica is built next to an old chapel dating from the 12th century. In the 17th century, Lyon was ravaged by plague epidemics. Processions are organized on the hill of Fourvière to ask the Virgin to stop the plague.
In the evening, walk through the little streets and you will find lots of restaurant to choose from! Read my article on my favorite foodies addresses in Lyon!
Before you leave the city on Sunday, take a quick taxi ride for a romantic brunch in a gastronomic restaurant with a panoramic view from the top of the tower in the business district: Celest Bar & Restaurant. In order to highlight this incredible space, imposing suspensions have been installed in a “constellation” spirit, echoing the famous expression “having your head in the stars”. The view is breathtaking!
Then, it will be easy from there to catch train, taxi, shuttle to leave the city after this great romantic experience in Lyon!
I hope you enjoyed this post on how to spend a great 48 hours romantic getaway in Lyon.
