Classified in 1979 as a Unesco World Inheritage Site, it is one of the most beautiful achievements of French art in the 17th century. The castle of Louis XIV, the Roi Soleil , is a palace that shines with a thousand lights.
The king enlarged it in a colossal and majestic architectural style, created the Hall of Mirrors, a true masterpiece, and added the gardens of Le Nôtre. The small brick castle that existed previously was to become the great palace. |
Visiting the Château de Versailles can take a good day or more. The main entrance is already a sight to behold. A golden royal gate and columned monuments surround the entrance from the Place d’Armes. From the outside of the castle you can see: sculptures, gilding, windows, doors… The castle is immense and of remarkable grandeur!
You enter through the Royal Courtyard and then go to the Marble Courtyard. |
From the beginning of the visit, you enter the castle gallery with an impressive collection of works of arts. The tour continues with the Grand Appartement du Roi. Here the ceilings are real masterpieces. Then the Hall of Mirrors is the most important and unforgettable room in the castle. It is 73 metres long and has 17 arched windows and 357 mirrors. It is the most beautiful room in the castle.
Let’s carry on with the Queen’s large flat, then the Museum of French History. Afterwards we have the Gallery of Battles, a room that is very remarkable for its presentation. |
In the gardens of the castle, it is pleasant to take a walk through the groves. The fountains are all along on the way. At Versailles these gardens overlook the splendid and unique architecture of the castle, reminiscent of the splendour of the Sun King’s court.
The Grand Canal is the free part of the park, where you can have a picnic. Let’s carry on walking to Marie Antoinette’s estate, the gardens of the Petit Trianon, a pretty corner of the countryside imagined and created by Marie Antoinette, where she could escape from the sometimes heavy atmosphere of the Court. In addition, the castle offers a way to discover the palace gardens. The enchantment of the Grandes Eaux Nocturnes illuminates the place every Saturday from June to September. Sunsets at the Château de Versailles are undeniably unforgettable. |
